Can you please share the your role at iWill?

I am a professional physician, so I am responsible for patients who experience symptoms such as fevor or throat inflation. My patients range from those in China to overseas Chinese. I start at Wuhan volunteering at HuangGang. Then, I expand my service to overseas. I started treating CoVid when it was still in its primary stage. I am also the supervisor of a large group of volunteers in different areas. If any of them have any questions or concerns, the docots in the group will form their diagnoses judging from the circumstances given.

As a member of the iWill Volunteer Service, how do you feel about this experience?

Usually I have a heavy work load, and there are a lot of patients visiting me, so I probably did not have any special feelings during this experience. After joining iWill, I have to not only pay attention to the patients sitting in front of me but also the ones in my wechat groups. Therefore, I developed a stronger bond to my patients because we are able to communicate even if we are not in the same room. Doctors are just a role in the society, so I don't think we are special in any way.

Moreover, the disgnosis and treatments were given to the patients in the same procedure no matter we are face-to-face or communicating via internet.

What was your most memorable experience during this volunteer experience?

I contributed numerous suggestions when I worked for the patients in the different Wechat groups. The most memorable case happened in the overseas group, where a patient at New York suffering from displeasure and immediately was diagnosed as a COVID-19 patient. At that time he has not taken the NAT(Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing) yet, so I suspect he carries the virus. The entire process from the initiation of forming a volunteer team for him to utilizing the medical supplies available lasted for only one week. According to his own words, he experienced the best medical care and medical support. He is very thankful of me and the medical specialists who stayed by his side. Under the service of our team, he and his daughter who lived with him all got the negative result from the NAT, indicating that he did not catch the contagious disease. We mainly rely on traditional Chinese medicine to nurse him back to health, and we seldomly used western medicines. In the early stages, when we first formed the wechat groups, he is the only one who kept on asking questions via CoVID, which caught my attention and caused me to want to get in touch with him. After close investigation, I discovered that the status of the coating of his tongue was similar to those records of CoVID patients coming from hospitals at Wuhan. Moreover, he has fevor and suffers from respiratory insufficiency. Therefore we put a high premium on his case, which made this event unforgettable to me.

As a volunteer in China, have you encountered inconveniences while helping oversea patients? You may consider aspects such as available medical supply and legal responsibilities.

Not really. Take the case above as example, although the patient is in New York, and I am in China, U.S. does not have any law forbidding him from reaching out to me for help. Disclaimers apply while we carry out our service, and the medical care provided depends on what's currently available for him. He soon recovered, and the NAT result one week later is negative, indicating his healthy condition.

What is your attitude if there are more pro bono volunteer activities in the future?

If there are future emergency circumstances that require volunteers to provide medical care, I will carry on my duty as one of its participants.
