I am Jin Lijuan, born in HuangGang, Hubei province in 1990 and joined the communist party of China in 2012. I received a graduate degree in social work and psychological consultant. I love public welfare and have been engaged in the elderly care industry since 2013. It is a special honor to join the joint action of iWill volunteers and do my best to fight against novel coronavirus!

Why did you choose to join iWill?

I'm from Huanggang, Hubei, which is one of the most affected areas in the early phases of COVID-19. Sadly I have not had the chance to visit Huanggang in the past few years as I work here in Beijing. Seeing my hometown suffer from such tragedy made myself very, very worried, and I wanted to do something for my hometown. It was such a serendipity to find iWill to be recruiting for volunteers. I work as psychological consultant and social worker for job, so I ticked all the boxes. In February, I participated in a volunteering event that connected volunteers in Beijing with citizens in Hubei. I tried as best as I could to offer some help for this event, and I also learned very much from it. In March, there was another volunteering event. But this time was for those who needed help overseas. As a Chinese citizen and a party member, I felt the responsibility to do something. So I wasted no time and signed up for it too. To summarize it all into one sentence: I just want to do the best I can with my specialty, influencing lives with life.

We learned that Ms.Jin has had experiences in social work and counseling. Has these fields assisted you with your work at iWill?

I studied social-work in college, and earned the title "second-level psychological consultant" while I was in Graduate school. I have many interests in these fields. Speaking of my specialties, I want to put forth my knowledge into these volunteering events. So I always try to bring what I know into conversations in groupchats, assisting other volunteers with finding resources as well as fostering coordination between doctors, social workers, and psychological consultants. My past experiences in social work and consulting did help me alot with work at iWill. In fact, my knowledge in these fields is carved into the bone. I wish to offer professional help to these kind of services.

What do you consider to be the greatest difficulty in the past months at iWill? The most memorable moment?

Many things happened in the past month at iWill, including moments where I'm touched and grew as a person. The most difficult thing happens to be very different from what we've experienced in the pre-COVID19 times. As many one-to-one counselings switched to online during COVID-19, many clients did not seem to embrace our help. Frankly speaking, our help, at times, might not be what our clients needed the most. Often our clients are silent during and after our counselings, rarely giving us feedbacks. Even if they did, most of the time these responses were positive, thanking our service. We needed advice regarding what we could do more for the clients, and online consulting fails to establish the intimate relationship that we needed. If we couldn't know what our clients needed most, then we couldn't provide a particularly personalized experience for them. What we try to do instead is to offer help based on our subjective judgements, hoping to provide them the best service.

The most memorable moment is actually happening every single day, inside the iWill member groupchats. Whenever I encountered some difficulties at my counselings work, I could always trust my iWill friends for some positive encouragements. iWill has such a supportive group of volunteers. We help each other with our cases, and stress-relief seminars held by iWill during Qingming was also the emotional assistance I needed. Because of these encouragements, I believe once more that choosing to become a social worker and psychological counselor was a correct choice. I hope that, in the future, I want to achieve my fullest potential and thus help others achieve their potentials. I feel a huge sense of belonging to iWill.

Can you please give us the details of your work at iWill?

Throughout this entire event, I held two positions. Social worker was one of them; the other was pscyhological counselor. I, however, worked more as a social worker, such as the role as a group secretary for two teams. As a group secretary, I organized all professionals (doctors, social workers, psychological consultants) and put them into one team. Before events begin, I normally ask members how they are doing, whether they have interesting experiences in mind to share, etc.. I need to stay alert, distributing incoming work among members. In the global team, I was more of a mental support for other members. I'll share interesting music therapy or meditation articles into the groupchats, hopefully, through this, other members could feel my support.

I'm also responsible for a particular counseling case. The client thought that he was infected with COVID-19, as he showed the signs of it. After understanding his situation, I suggested to have one-to-one online counseling sessions with him. So we put doctors and psychological counselors into a personalized team for him. Social worker plays a huge role in counseling cases, coordinating medical resources as well as learning personally what the patient is going through. For this particular case, we asked doctors to first diagnose the patient based on the signs described, and luckily we learned that what he got wasn't COVID-19. This diagnosis was aimed to bring relief to the patient, and therefore decreasing his stress. After that, we introduced a special diet for him and continued to provide him with mental support. Now he seems to become better each day. I believe, in the near future, this case would be solved.

Is there anything that should be taken more seriously during an outbreak than during normal times?

I think psychological counseling should be taken more seriously during an outbreak than in normal times. During the epidemic, we could not communicate with our patients face to face and one to one. Most of the time, patients would not easily disclose their most authentic thoughts, and we could not judge their status by merely examining their micro expressions and tones. In addition, it is difficult to be in the same time zone and space. This poses great challenges for our consultants. Of course, there are some benefits. Through online consultation, we will pay more attention to time and efficiency. How to grasp the core quickly and accurately without touching the professional ethics and bottom line is also a meaningful thing to be done and thus provides us with a high sense of achievement. At present, I think I still have a long way to go to practice. As a junior in the field of psychology, I get a lot of energy in our psychology group, which also makes me have a deeper understanding of psychological counselors.

Referring to the more development of online services during the epidemic, will continue you to consider online activities after the epidemic period is over?

I would continue online activities after the outbreak since online activities are also a supplement to offline activities. It has many advantages such as accessing to a broader range of population. We combined many good online resources with offline activities and achieved a certain effect.

Is there one last thing you want to say to those who have contributed to the outbreak?

I want to use the lyrics in a recent hit song "听我说谢谢你" to express what I want to say to the people who have contributed to the recovery of the outbreak. “Thank you, because you, warmed the four seasons” and “Thank you for spreading happiness”
